Agriculture

Agricultural land in the public sector occupies 44,677 hectares in Oktyabrsky District. Of this 23,878 hectares are arable land (53%), 15,372 hectares are meadows (34.3%), 0.1 hectares are orchards (0.3%).

Reclaimed land accounts for 60% (26,812 hectares) of the total agricultural land. The cadastral valuation stands at 28.5 for agricultural land, and 31.7 - for arable land. In terms of composition, sandy soils prevail in the structure of the arable land (63%). Peat-bog soils occupy 34% of arable land and sandy loam soils – 3%.

The agricultural industry of Oktyabrsky District comprises eight agricultural and three industrial enterprises. Of these, eight are open joint-stock companies engaged in agricultural production: Nekrashinsky, Derbin, Moiseevka, Bumazhkova-agro, Lomovichi, Porechye-Oressa,"Krasnoslobodskoye, Oktyabrsky-Agro as well as the state-run institution Oktyabrsky Crop Testing Station, Oktyabrsky Dairy Plant, Oktyabrrayagroservice, and the Oktyabragrokhimiya agro-chemical services provider.

Oktyabrsky Dairy Plant, which is a branch of Rogachevsky MKK, produces butter, skimmed milk powder, and whole milk products.

Oktyabrrayagroservice manufactures chains, produces and mounts metal structures for lightweight livestock facilities (quonsets) and cage houses for calves, installs electrical, plumbing, water-sewage equipment, repairs and provides maintenance services to agricultural machinery, delivers fuels and lubricants and spare parts.

Oktyabragrokhimiya’s services include removal and application of organic and mineral fertilizers, treatment of crops against pests and plant diseases, chemical weed control, and liming of acidic soils.
