Lukashenko: Upcoming presidential election should complete renewal of country's political system

The next presidential election should complete the renewal of the country's political system, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during the government conference held on 10 September to discuss topical domestic policy matters and preparations for political campaigns, BelTA has learned.

Taking part in the meeting were the heads of the chambers of the parliament, the head of the Belarus President Administration, the state secretary of the Security Council, the heads of the Central Election Commission (CEC) and the State Security Committee (KGB).

"This [upcoming Belarus president] election should complete the formation of a renewed political system of our state," Aleksandr Lukashenko said. According to him, a lot has already been done in this regard. For example, the Belarusian People’s Congress has started working in the country's political system under the new constitutional status. The key approaches to its activity have been defined. "But a lot will have to be done before and during the presidential election," the head of state pointed out.

The president focused on preparations for the upcoming new five-year plan: "Elections are still elections, we have held them more than once. We will hold this election as well. But we really need to prepare for the next five-year plan. It will start in 2026. Therefore, I believe we should hold the next Belarusian People’s Congress at the beginning of next year. We need to present the strategy for the five-year plan to people and determine main areas of our development".

The president emphasized that this meeting is the first one in a series of events related to the upcoming election campaign. The meeting will discuss the main outlines of the work ahead. "Exactly the work. Not the holding of the event itself or the presidential election, but work. We need to develop some kind of plan. Because we cannot make any other decisions in such a group. What specific decisions can we make? Today there are no oblast governors, regional aides, government representatives, who, naturally, will be involved in the presidential election. Therefore, we will not be able to discuss the whole range of the matters," the head of state explained.

"I would like to discuss in general terms these matters with you and outline concrete steps to prepare and hold the main events – the Belarusian People’s Congress and the presidential election," Aleksandr Lukashenko summarized.
