Why Oktyabrsky District

Oktyabrsky district is located in the northwestern part of the Gomel region. It borders on Petrikovsky, Kalinkovichsky, Svetlogorsky districts of Gomel region, Bobruisk and Glussky - Mogilev region, Lyubansky - Minsk region. The length of the region from east to west is 65 km, from north to south - 43 km. The center of the district is the town of Oktyabrsky, located 220 km from the regional center of Gomel.

The total area of the district is 138,119 hectares, of which 58% of the territory is occupied by forest, mainly mixed, in lower areas with moist soils there are blueberry and moss pine forests, 1.2% are rivers, lakes, artificial reservoirs and canals, 33% or 45 , 5 thousand hectares of agricultural land, including 26.7 thousand hectares of arable land.

The territory of the region is rich in minerals such as oil, coal, potash and rock salt, which are at the stage of geological development. Commercial oil development has been established only at the Vishanskoye and Ozemlyanskoye fields.

Peat-bog and sod-podzolic soil types prevail on the territory of the district. A qualitative assessment of the area's land resources was carried out in 2000. The total score of the cadastral assessment was: for arable land - 30.7, for improved meadows - 24.0, for agricultural land - 28.0.

On the territory of the district there is the Republican biological reserve "Oktyabrsky" on an area of 4205 hectares. The territory of the reserve belongs to the Central-Predpolessky complex of massifs of the Berezinsko-Predpolessky forest-growing region.

The flora of the reserve is represented by 507 species of higher vascular plants belonging to 286 genera of 82 families, and at present it is relatively little disturbed. The growth of 6 species of protected plants included in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus (mountain arnica, red pollen head, tuberous chubby, common ram, green-flowered lyubka, marsh violet) and 12 species of animals (black stork, big bittern, great spotted eagle, lesser spotted eagle, hobby , gray crane, green woodpecker, common kingfisher, bluethroat, nightingale cricket, blue tit, hazel dormouse).

On the territory of the district there are 10 rivers (the Ptich river belongs to medium and 9 small ones) and 10 main canals. All rivers and canals of the Dnieper and Pripyat basins belong to the river system of the Black Sea.

The Peschanka and Rudyanka rivers belong to the Dnieper basin. The length of the rivers is 9 km.

The Pripyat basin includes the Visha river with the Ippa tributary, the Ptich, Oressa rivers with tributaries of the Zagalsky, Fastovichsky, Golovchitsky, Slavkovichsko-Yaminsky canals with the Borovitsa tributary, the Neretovka river with the Serebryansky tributary, the Tremlya river with the tributaries of the river. Branch and k. Medved, Neslavka river, Sekerichsky, Zubarevichsky, Volozhinsky canals. The length of rivers and canals belonging to the Pripyat basin is 278 km.
